Conflict

Conflict
Conflict drives the plot and creates interest in the character’s fate. It is the difficulties that a character faces.

Internal conflict—when a character struggles with something emotionally or mentally: a conflict of the heart or mind.

External conflict—when a character struggles with some outside force: usually in the form of other characters.

Types of Conflict:
  • Desire: character’s yearning
  • Challenge: a quest or journey
  • Opposition: another character standing in the way
  • Bond: something holding a person back
  • Dilemma: choice between a rock and a hard place

Multiple Conflicts
Usually, an interesting, multi-faceted story has several conflicts with multiples of characters

Suspense
In addition to conflict, it is a good idea to build suspense to keep a reader’s interest

Resolution
A good story provides a resolution to the conflict. You can’t leave a reader hanging!
